Had a route planned, but found myself in Takoma Park MD with no clear idea how to return to the neighborhood. It was cold, breezy, and drizzly, and I found at least 6 miles of new road. Once I figured out where I was I beelined home for a total of 13. I seem somewhere along the way to have jammed a couple of toes, but no real complaints for the last long(ish) run of 2012.
Getting lost can be fun if you have the time and the legs for it. One of the things I like about the GPS on my phone is that it makes me more confident about amending my routes. This means that my New York routes, if you mapped them, would look a bit like a Ptolemaic map of the solar system (with Brooklyn Heights at the center of the universe). It's even more fun when I'm running out of town. When I ran in an unfamiliar city, I'd always do an out and back route, and minimize the number of turns. Now there's no need, and there's no better way to see a new city than on a random run.
